Hotel architects and designers! – How much can you rely on them?

In my many years in the hospitality industry I had the privilege to work in many hotels!

I was exposed to Leading Hotels of the World, SLH, Boutique properties, Designer hotels, and many other 4 to 5 star properties.

In my career as manager and hotel consultant, I have been involved in close to 30 hotel and resort openings, so, I know that I am in a good position to write down some facts which might help hotel owners, developers and investors here in Thailand and south-east Asia.

The two most important comments – to keep in mind – I want to say right in the beginning!

”Some of the best architects and designers do NOT know ANYTHING about hotels, resorts, about service, operation, comfort, hospitality, work flow etc.”

“Most architects and designers do NOT CARE AT ALL if your hotel will actually be ‘workable’ and ‘profitable’ – they will blame ‘Lack of service’!

Some issues Thai hotel owners have with their managers!

Our previous articles did focus on hotel owners and investor’s shortcomings, their habits and mistakes.

This article I like to focus on the shortcomings of some general managers. A general manager is a leading position that can lead to either failure or success.

The below are some of the comments we get from hotel owners and investors when they are talking to us about their hotel manager or general manager here in Thailand.

We trust that you see our articles as a benefit for hoteliers, owners and investors at all times. However, knowing the industry well, I foresee that this article might well trigger lots of comments.

Top 10 issues with “Managing Family Style”!

As a hotel consultant based here in Thailand, I frequently observe hotel and resort owners and senior managers informing employees that it is the owners or managements wish that everyone should work as a big family!  Even every new employee is informed that this is the owners wish and concept!

It all sounds so good, so sweet, so kind and so inviting, doesn’t it?

My thoughts about a “green” hotel

I did have a discussion with a hotel owner who claims
that his hotel is a ‘green’ (environmental friendly) hotel and he wants some
advice on how to advertise this with the media and tour operators.

I need to mention that I am a true fan of any hotel owner
who is focusing on sustainable tourism and environmental friendly concepts.

Article 1 – Challenges with some Hotel Owners and some Hotel Developments

I am writing now a few articles about some serious
challenges a consultant or manager might face sometimes. Out of respect, and to
be professional, I will not mention any names.

I hope that this and upcoming articles will inspire and
help other hotel owners and investors somehow when planning to build and
operate a hotel or resort.

Basics for Hotel Owners and Investors when building and/or operating a hotel or resort

We have seen many hotels and resorts which look good, but
still receive many negative comments from guests since important basics have
been overlooked.

Never forget the fact that some of the best architects do
not have any hotel or service industry experience, so they don’t know how to
design back-of-house areas, rooms and public areas for comfort and convenience!
For most architects, the most important thing is to create a good looking hotel
or resort to add to their portfolio. They will not care anymore ones the place
is ready!

Today I like to give my comments and recommendations for certain
basics to keep in mind when building a hotel or resort.

Fight through Crisis.

.. a talk at Queen
Sirikit National Convention Center, Thailand

During crisis, most times, we think about
training staff, stop overtime-time payments, cut expense on your Human
Resources, unpaid leave policy or even lay offs.  I cannot say this is wrong, as long as it is
most suitable and relevant to the situation.

On August 6, 2009 I was invited to be one
of the panelists talking about “360 degree management for the tourism and
hospitality industry during a “crisis” – organized by KBank, Thailand at Queen
Sirikit National Convention Center.  (I
personally admire KBank a great deal for their continuous educational
activities for their clients and non-clients as what they have done reflecting
a sincere banking business).

I wish to summarize some of my talk in this
article as well as to extend some subjects here that I only lightly talked
about at Queen Sirikit Convention Center.

You have a vision, then what?

Most of organizations are well
equipped with a beautiful written vision, mission or philosophies, either on their
websites or a kind of wall.  That is the
second progress after the owners or the management team did come up with their
vision.  But what’s next?

Hello!! My PP Island – I, ME, MY, MINE symptom (Part 2

Early July, 09, I was invited by the
Tourism Development Office, Ministry of Tourism and Sports (Thailand) to PP Island to conduct a training session on service excellence. The project was good and successful.

In the evening after the session is
finished, a young hotel owner invites all of us, (4 officers from the tourist
office and me) to have dinner at his hotel.  Though I am tired, I politely
accept the invitation.

Send a complaint letter a waste of time?

I feel the strong urge to take over the writing today from
my partner and let you know about an email reply from a hotel owner I had just
yesterday.  I know that my writing skill
is not good as hers
(smile),  .. but will do my best.

The Story:

As you might have seen earlier on this Blog, me and my
business partner stayed in a place branded as a kind of Boutique hotel at
Bangkok (Sathorn Road). We did choose this place because the Website is simply
stunning and very well done!

However, the place was terrible … Non-English or Thai
Speaking employees (Burmese) very noisy hotel, dirty and smelly. (Please note
that we really feel sorry for all the Burmese People suffering, but we strongly
feel that the employees should be able to speak Thai at least or some English)
